The Sorbonne, intellectual heart of the Latin Quarter

Founded in the 13th century by Robert de Sorbon, the Sorbonne is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. A true sanctuary of knowledge, it shaped the identity of the Latin Quarter and embodies the international renown of French university life.

The buildings, rebuilt in the 19th century by architect Henri-Paul Nénot. It includes  the chapel where Cardinal de Richelieu rests, the main courtyard (Cour d’Honneur, and the Grand Amphitheatre, famous for its ceremonies and frescoes.

A living monument, the Sorbonne has seen generations of students, researchers, and writers pass through its halls. It was also a hotbed of ideas and debate, marking Parisian intellectual history, from medieval humanists to the 20th-century student movements: May 1968 was born here.
